THE SUNDAY BRIEF ยท Nยบ 003 ยท THE BIG DECISION

Patek Philippe ยท Nautilus 5810/1G, 50th anniversary. 2,000 pieces, CHF 75,000. Hours and minutes.
The Nautilus turns 50 this year. Patek Philippe is celebrating with three limited wristwatches: a 38 mm platinum 5610/1P and two 41 mm white-gold 5810s, 5,000 pieces in all, priced from CHF 60,000 to CHF 90,000. Every one of them tells the time and nothing else.
That is the right way to mark the anniversary, because it is what the market pays for. And it is the least interesting thing Patek Philippe knows how to make.
A house built on complications.
From its founding in 1839 to the Calibre 89 of 1989, Patek Philippe made watches cleverer: the first perpetual calendar wristwatch in 1925, then the Graves Supercomplication, delivered in 1933. Since 1932, the Stern family, dial makers who bought the firm during the Depression, has sold something else on top: inheritance. Patekโs advertising has said so for 30 years: โYou never actually own a Patek Philippe. You merely look after it for the next generation.โ
The market now pays for neither.
The Patek index is a Nautilus index.
WatchCharts tracks the secondary market for Patek through the 30 references that change hands for the most money. As of 25 September, all 30 are a Nautilus or an Aquanaut. Not one calendar, chronograph or minute repeater makes the list. So when you read that โPatekโ is up 17.6% in a year, you are reading about two steel sports families.
Split the brand into its own collections and the picture changes.
WatchCharts index | 1 year | 3 years |
|---|---|---|
Nautilus | +16.6% | +3.1% |
Calatrava | +7.6% | โ8.0% |
Complications | +2.1% | โ14.0% |
Grand Complications | +1.3% | โ11.5% |
USD indices, last updated 25 September 2026. Secondary market prices, not auction records.
Two things stand out. The Nautilus has had a strong year, but only after a weak one: it sits just 3.1% above its level of three years ago. And the watches that carry Patekโs engineering, the calendars and chronographs, have gone nowhere or backwards.
Twice the list price for steel. A third off for mechanics.
Put market prices next to what Patek Philippe itself charges today and the gap becomes absurd.

Look at the 5726/1A and the 5205G. Both have an annual calendar, a complication Patek Philippe invented and patented in 1996. One sits in a Nautilus case and sells for 92% over list. The other sits in a round case and sells for 36% under. The movement is not what the market is pricing.
DEALER ADVERTS ยท EURO AREA ยท CHECKED 16 OCTOBER 2026
Estimates are one thing. Here is what dealers are actually asking on Chrono24, euro-area countries only: the two cheapest dealer adverts for the Nautilus 5726/1A, and the two cheapest for the blue 5205G-013 with box and papers.
Watch | Dealer | Asking | vs list |
|---|---|---|---|
Nautilus 5726/1A-010, box, no papers | jewelry collection, Madrid | โฌ95,000 | +58% |
Nautilus 5726/1A-001, 2014, box and papers | Msellati Orologi, Rome | โฌ104,000 | +73% |
5205G-013 blue, 2020 (approx.), box and papers | HOLY JEWELLERY, Innsbruck | โฌ39,900 | โ38% |
5205G-013 blue, 2022, box and papers | DAO WATCHES, Paris | โฌ42,750 | โ34% |
Asking prices, not sale prices. vs list: against todayโs patek.com price (โฌ60,126 for the 5726/1A, โฌ64,438 for the 5205G). An earlier silver-dial version, the 5205G-001, is offered at โฌ28,990 by Mรผnchen Watches, with box but without papers.
Real adverts tell the same story as the estimates. In a Nautilus case, the annual calendar is offered at 58% to 73% over list. In a round case, more than a third under.

Patekโs own president saw it coming.
When he retired the steel 5711 in 2021, Thierry Stern explained the decision to Forbes in one sentence: โIf I only focus on one model, I would be dead in five years.โ The following year he told The New York Times that making only steel watches was โdangerous and too easyโ. Five years on, the market has done what he warned against: it prices the brand as if it made one model.
The mood is shifting at the edges. Over two years, the 35 mm Nautilus 7118 rose 52% on the secondary market against 27% for the 40 mm 5711, according to WatchCharts data reported by Forbes in May. Smaller, yes. Still a Nautilus.
ALLOCATED VIEW ยท THREE BUYERS
You want a Nautilus because you love the design: fine, but know what you are paying for. Around twice list buys the case, the bracelet and the name on the waiting list, not more watchmaking. If a 5811/1G at โฌ152,000 is the watch you would wear every day for ten years, it can still be the right choice.
You want to own Patek watchmaking: this is the best moment in years. A 5205G annual calendar at around โฌ41,000 is โฌ23,000 under what Patek asks for it new. A 5905/1A flyback chronograph with annual calendar sits โฌ28,000 under.
You see the Nautilus as a store of value: look at the three-year line. +3.1% is not a rocket. It is a watch that fell, then recovered.
The watches you would actually hand down are the ones the market discounts. For a collector, that is the opening: real Patek, below list.
My price: a blue 5205G-013 becomes compelling to me below โฌ42,000, with box, papers and a recent service history. One euro-area dealer advert with box and papers sits under that price today, at โฌ39,900, though it does not mention a recent service. At that level you get more Patek for less money than any Nautilus on sale.
VERDICT ยท 5205G-013 ANNUAL CALENDAR ยท BUY BELOW โฌ42,000 ยท NAUTILUS ยท WAIT
02 ยท IN BRIEF
The charity record, five years later.
Last week we said the Four Seasons Daytonas were a donation, not a data point. Here is the proof from Patekโs own history. In December 2021, the first of 170 Tiffany-blue Nautilus 5711/1A-018 sold for $6,503,500 at a Phillips charity sale. Today WatchCharts estimates a 5711/1A-018 at $1,177,063, down 10.8% in a year. The record was real. It just never described the market.
Next Sunday: Ferrariโs first electric car sold out before a single delivery. Did buyers want the car, or their place in the queue?
